Inca Gold shows psychedelic side on new free song ‘Atom’

Variations on the term “psychedelic” are frequently employed to describe Inca Gold, and it’s understandable enough: the English quartet that makes spacey, swirling music that gets a lot of comparisons to bands like Portishead.

Still, all those “psychedelic” appellations seem overly broad, at least on “Atom,” the band’s latest free download. It’s ethereal, with subtle swells of keyboards and snarling guitars that rev up and recede beneath ghostly, echoing vocals.

The song opens Inca Gold’s latest EP, “Inca Gold III,” which is due Feb. 20.
