Sonic Avenues joins Dirtnap, previews LP with free song

It seems the fine folks at Dirtnap Records have been busy scouring the Great White North for rollicking post-punk bands. They found one: Sonic Avenues, a Montreal group that cut its teeth on the Ottawa scene. We know what you’re thinking: There’s an Ottawa scene?

Yes, but try to focus: Sonic Avenues formed in 2006, released a few singles and then, on Going Gaga Records, a self-titled LP that has sold out twice. (It’s available digitally, if you can stand to go without vinyl.) The foursome returns Jan. 15 with its Dirtnap debut, “Television Youth,” and what better way to preview the album than by giving away the title track?

And what a title track. “Television Youth” the song is fast, catchy and pointed, and the serrated guitars, clipped vocals and restless energy remind us of Wire and Mission of Burma in roughly equal measures. We’ve had the opportunity to hear the rest of the album, and it’s just as ferociously compelling as the free tune.
