Texas duo Beck & Cauthen gives away track from debut

Harmonizing brothers, or guys who harmonize like brothers, are all the rage in indie music circles these days, be they Avetts or Mumfords. Now there’s also Beck & Cauthen.

They are not, in fact, related, though each is the musical product of his forebears: Dave Beck’s musician father gave him ’50s upright bass, and Paul Cauthen’s preacher grandfather taught him to sing and play guitar.

Improbable as it seems, they two met when each brought his instrument to a park in San Marcos, Texas, with the intention of writing songs. That they did, just in band form. In fact, Beck & Cauthen has a debut album coming soon — but not so soon they’ll begrudge you a free track.

“Sons of Fathers” showcases their vocal harmonies and understated acoustic instrumentation for a gently hazy country-folk feel. It’s a promising preview from what sounds like a talented new band.

  1. Their album is out and the band has been renamed Sons of Fathers. I saw them live October 2011 in Brooklyn, NY and they are really very good and worth giving a listen to.
