Tokyo quartet the Suzan covers Kanye West’s ‘Paranoid’; plays 2 CMJ shows
One thing in this world there’s not enough of is Kanye West covers. William Fitzsimmons did a shattering solo-acoustic cover of “Heartless” a couple years ago, and then there was nothing — until just now, as Japanese girl-rock band The Suzan tries a version of “Paranoid.”
They’ve given it a minimalist feel, with spare percussion and a stark, grunting bass line pinning down reverberating lead vocals and backing harmonies.
The foursome — sisters Rie and Saori, and band mates Nico and Ikue — next week releases a new album, “Golden Week for the Poco Poco Beat,” which was produced by Björn Yttling of Peter, Björn and John.
The ladies play a pair of CMJ shows: there’s the Nicky Digital showcase today at 9 p.m. at Ella, and then something called the “Fool’s Gold 3 Year Anniversary @ Pitchfork Offline,” Saturday at 12:30 a.m. at Brooklyn Bowl.

Kanye is my favorite rapper I don’t care about the album cover.. Art only has to make sense to the artist and it brings different emotions from the people seeing..All I care about is what’s on the album if you don’t buy it I doubt it will hurt him that much…People saying he sold his soul I don’t see him promoting violence like the rappers who haven’t “sold their souls”..People saying Eminem didn’t sell his soul, Its funny the white rapper was the only one that didn’t..Its like people saying the only way for a black person to be rich is if they sold thier soul…smh
