Members of the Verve, the Fireman, team in folk-rock act Erland & the Carnival

Nice pedigree: In addition to singer, guitarist and Scotsman Erland Cooper, the band Erland & the Carnival includes former Verve and Blur guitarist Simon Tong and Fireman drummer David Nock.

Together with Andy Bruce on keys and David Wheeler on keys, the folk-rock  fivesome has released a self-titled debut in the UK and is headed stateside with “Trouble in Mind,” an EP due Oct. 19 on Full Time Hobby/Yep Roc.

Tong describes the band’s sound as “Pentangle meets Ennio Morricone meets Love meets 13th Floor Elevators meets Joe Meek,” which crams in rather a lot of influential influences. Still, you can hear what he means on the free song, which happens to be the title track. It’s deft and melodic and just a little quirky.
