Sister duo CocoRosie readies fourth LP, ‘Grey Oceans,’ due in May on Sub Pop

Describing CocoRosie is no easy task, so let’s try it this way: it’s a pair of sisters, Bianca “Coco” and Sierra “Rosie” Casady, who share a fondness for synthesizers, weird folk music, off-kilter pop and tremulous vocals.

They have released three full-length albums together since 2004 and signed to Sub Pop for their fourth, “Grey Oceans,” due May 11. They recorded much of the record in a studio in Buenos Aires, though free song “Lemonade” bears the stamp of no particular time or place.

Both sisters sing, and their voices are something of an acquired taste. In fact, their whole aesthetic may seem like a hopeless affectation on “Lemonade,” which features distant piano, the spidery hum of a synthesizer and spare, unadorned horns, along with vocals that veer between creaky and stylized vintage-pop. All the same, there’s something a little haunting about it.
