Describing CocoRosie is no easy task, so let’s try it this way: it’s a pair of sisters, Bianca “Coco” and Sierra “Rosie” Casady, who share a fondness for synthesizers, weird folk music, off-kilter pop and tremulous vocals.
They have released three full-length albums together since 2004 and signed to Sub Pop for their fourth, “Grey Oceans,” [...]

Post-punk agitprop bands like Gang of Four and Mission of Burma did awesome things with sharp, angular guitar lines and twitchy rhythms. Baltimore’s Double Dagger followed proudly in that tradition on last year’s LP “More” — except instead of guitar, the band uses bass.
The trio continues in that vein on a new EP, “Masks.” The [...]

We’re honestly not sure what to think about Mantler. It’s either the cheesiest music ever, or totally awesome. Either way, we’re fascinated.
Mantler is the musical project of Toronto’s Chris A. Cummings, who’s developed something of a reputation over three albums for fastidious production on songs that triangulate, sort of, rock, funk and smooth jazz.
He’s back [...]

Canadian indie-rock quartet Tokyo Police Club returns June 8 with a new album on a new label.

If we read the press material right, we’re pretty sure it said that Dazzle Ships formed around the beginning of this year, and has already landed on a bill with Memory Tapes at a sold-out show in Los Angeles. That’s fast even by the lightning-quick standards of the digital age.
Thing is, you’d never guess that [...]

There’s no question that Zooey Deschanel has grown enormously as a singer on “Volume Two” (Merge), the second album from She & Him.
She sounds more confident and takes more chances, making her sophomore outing with guitarist M. Ward a far stronger album than 2008’s “Volume One.” Gone is her tentative vocal approach, which sounded at [...]

If David Bowie digs it, it’s probably worth checking out: the English rock star recently devoted space on his website to plugging experimental pop duo Boxharp.
The group is a project of singer Wendy Allen and producer Scott Solter (Mountain Goats, Superchunk, St. Vincent, etc.), who release latest album, “The Green,” is due May 4 on [...]

Punk rock by the late ’70s had radiated outward from New York and London, marauding through the countryside like a uncontainable sonic scourge to hinterland towns. For example: Louisville, home of the Endtables, whose concise catalog gets anthologized April 20 by Drag City.
Now one of the more obscure punk acts of the era, the core [...]

There’s a certain single-minded determination to the music of Archie Bronson Outfit, a London band fond of grinding noise and throbbing beats on its third album, “Coconut” (Domino).
It’s a relentless record, full of songs that seethe and roil as singer Sam Windett intones his lyrics through urgent, crackling static, as if he’s howling through a [...]
