Things were going well for Man/Miracle until singer and guitarist Danny Swimp broke his back.

That put a crimp in the California band’s ambitious performance schedule — in fact, the group, which formed when the musicians were high school students in Los Osos before moving to Santa Cruz, spent several months on hiatus while Swimp recovered to the point where he could participate in recording the band’s first EP.

When Swimp was better, the band moved again, to Oakland, where they recorded another EP and their full-length debut, “The Shape of Things,” due Feb. 23 on Third Culture.

First song “Hot Sprawl” features full, warm guitars and reverb-soaked vocals, along with a galloping middle section that shows off the talent of the rhythm section.
