Populist band These United States lets the people decide which album it makes

These United States keep busy: The Washington D.C./Kentucky indie rock band is readying its third full-length release in the past 18 months, which is an impressive pace by any standard.

Making this new record all the more interesting, though, is that the songs on “Everything Touches Everything” (out Sept. 1 on United Interests) were one of two batches of tunes that bandleader Jesse Elliott had in mind. How did he choose? He turned over the decision to the American people, who in electing Barack Obama last November also inadvertently picked which album These United States made.

Unusual, for sure. But also pretty cool. Check out the title track.
